RSA and RCG in NSW: what hospitality workers need

Two certificates open most doors in NSW hospitality: the RSA and the RCG. Here is what they are and why venues ask for them.

What is the RSA?

RSA stands for Responsible Service of Alcohol. In NSW you need a current RSA certificate to serve alcohol, and to work in many roles where alcohol is sold or supplied, such as bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs.

What is the RCG?

RCG stands for Responsible Conduct of Gambling. It is generally required for staff who work in gaming areas, for example around poker machines. Many pubs and clubs expect staff to hold both, so check the venue's requirements.

Why do venues ask for them first?

A venue can face serious penalties if it uses staff without the right certificates. That makes you much easier to roster if you already hold them, so they are often the first thing a manager checks.

How to get them

  • Choose a provider approved by the NSW Government
  • Complete the course, which is commonly offered online or in person
  • Keep a digital and printed copy of your certificate
  • Put it near the top of your CV

Always check the current rules

Requirements and course providers can change. Confirm the latest details with Liquor & Gaming NSW before you enrol.

Quick answers

Do I need an RSA to work in a cafe?
Only if alcohol is served. Many cafes do not serve alcohol, but holding an RSA still widens the jobs you can apply for.
What is the difference between RSA and RCG?
The RSA covers serving alcohol responsibly. The RCG covers working in gaming areas, such as poker machines.
